Kandinsky Kimono by Toni Gerdes

The Exemplary 2024
2nd Place, Professional Original

My Kandinsky Kimono was inspired by the beautiful Expressionistic and Abstract paintings by Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944). This kimono is based on several of Kandinsky’s later works that feature abstract shapes with his own take on color. In his paintings, many of Kandinsky’s color appear to be slightly grayed. I chose to recreate this color effect by selecting, primarily, Needlepoint, Inc. silks that mirrored his color choices. By adding Sparkle! Braid throughout the piece, I did give my rendition a little pizazz. The piece is stitched on 18ct. white mono canvas and is completely covered by the stitching.
