The Exemplary 2026
Hanazume by Heather Shulick
2nd Place, Professional Japanese Embroidery
Hanazume (Design © JEC), meaning Flower Circle, is rendered in silk and metal threads on white habatae silk using traditional Japanese embroidery techniques. The circular composition brings together maple leaves, chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and pine trees—each a symbol of seasonal change, resilience, and continuity within Japanese visual language.
This piece represents my first foray into Japanese embroidery. Through the disciplined structure of the design and the intentional use of materials, I was introduced to foundational techniques that emphasize precision, patience, and respect for process. Working with silk and metal threads required a heightened awareness of tension, light, and movement, reinforcing the importance of control balanced with delicacy.
Hanazume served as both a technical and conceptual entry point into this tradition, grounding me in core fundamentals while deepening my appreciation for the symbolism and craftsmanship inherent in Japanese embroidery.
